Making the feathers fly

Once again one of our bird boxes achieved a nest – this year a family of great tits. If we were methodical we would have logged and documented the day when the first twig appeared and then the eggs. But we aren’t that methodical nowadays.

Our oldest birdbox – with a camera inside- is now about 9 years old and we have seen lots of families come and go. In our first year we had a family of blue tits. It was amazing with ten eggs laid – all of them hatched and eventually fledged. In other years there have been fatalities both inside and outside the box and that is so sad.

This year the great tit laid 6 eggs and they all hatched and eventually all fledged. I would have to say that this year they didn’t all leave at the same time and even when they had gone it could have been argued that some of them had not been quite ready.

I fear that the young birds are prone to predators. Some of these pictures show that they are still relying on parents to be a source of food and as you may see they appear very vulnerable.

But they have all gone and no adult has returned for a second brood. So it appears that the season for us has already come to an end.
