Inside and Outside Norwich Castle

Now that all the renovation work and a total reconstruction of the inside of the keep of Norwich castle has been completed, I thought I would go for a wander round with the camera.
Outside it all looks the same – by day and by night

To be fair these two images were taken some years ago when the castle contributed to the Norwich lights. Don’t ask, because I don’t know who the people were – anyway some of them will have grown up/old a bit since then!

Inside the castle it all looks very swish – and ready for Christmas.

The crowds who visited the re-opened keep have mostly gone away, but on the day when I wished to look round dozens of schoolchildren obviously had the same idea.

I managed most shots when they were having their lunch. The large domestic area where serious eating and drinking took place is impressive – impressive partly because of its size and partly because the table settings, food, seats and even a throne can be used, sampled and sat upon. It’s a sort of interactive refectory (nevertheless the food is artificial – but designed to make one feel hungry.)

The other thing that is peculiar about the dining area is that at certain times bits of the history of the building of the castle are projected on to the walls on three side of the room.

The chapel and a bedroom on this level may also be discovered.

Below all of that the history of the earliest period may be seen – an opportunity to make artistic use of the shapes and displays.

Of course they let us out on the roof – all a bit disappointing – glass protection and in only a few places could I brandish the camera over the battlements. Despite lots of talk about the castle and the church, it was very difficult to see the cathedral from the roof area.
A great café downstairs – where they serve real food. Good food, but I think the staff need more room.
The renovation has been a massive project – maybe I will return to obtain the images I missed.
NEW IDEA – now you get an advertisement when the blog ends. If you are anywhere near Burnham Market in North Norfolk on the days listed do come and see me – we are just off the main green.
