When you’re 100 I expect you deserve a party

No! – not me – I’ve still some way to go. It is the Norfolk Punt Club which is celebrating its centenary. The club was founded in 1926 when a number of adventurous Norfolk sailors decided to race in converted East Anglian gun punts that had been initially built for wild-fowling. The club got under way with remarkable speed categorizing different sorts of punts and generally drawing up the rules for racing by the end of 1926.

Some of my regular readers may be a bit vague about what a Norfolk Punt is – come on – keep up, you’ve seen them before. This is a Norfolk Punt, but a modern one

– this is one of the very early ones.

Now back to the party.

It was a great occasion with a 3 piece jazz band

Members were encouraged to bring their own food and if possible to cook it on the barbeque

Sadly the weather wasn’t special. The temperature was reasonably high but during the evening the wind, coming straight in off the sea, was cold.

There were those who dressed up

and those who came as they were.

Cooking, or even opening up a packet was not everyone’s forte.

Never fear though there was always an expert on hand to ensure that the grub was properly cooked.

People kept arriving – more boats.

Food has always been important at the Norfolk Punt Club. Even on a normal Sunday there is a tea hut with cakes. That is the way things are at the club -nothing too precious – nothing too sophisticated, but a club where the atmosphere is always, jolly. Judge for yourself from the pictures.
