Brown on Green

You can tell this blog is written by a Brit mainly because sooner or later he will be talking about the weather..

Nevertheless you have to admit we have experienced a summer and early Autumn with a difference. I do enjoy Autumn, especially when there are scenes like this.

This year though I noticed half way through August that the leaves on some of the trees and bushes were beginning to change colour from their normal green to brown.

In some cases scorching was to blame – foliage that could not escape either the heat or all day sunshine, just seemed to give up a wither away. Even our Christmas tree died!

As always there have been winners and losers, just look at these berries – food for some passing bird when the days get a lot shorter and cooler.

Perhaps more than in other years I noticed that certain trees seemed to pack up shop and surrender their usual green and turn brown, sometimes it was an isolated tree in among healthy looking ones– hence the title of this week’s offering “Brown on Green.”

I am led to believe that tree roots may have something to do with the phenomenon as well.

Even so I was sad in August to find that trees I associate with vibrant colours looked dull and tired. Now that we are in to October perhaps the browns will perk up a bit. It is all such a mystery.

Maybe next week I can have a look at things that have done well during the drought.

Watch this space!

You are allowed to send me pictures of your trees, especially if they are flourishing.
